About Giclee Giclee printing is to painters what the Gootenberg Press was to the rest of us in that it was such an advance in painting or photographic reproduction, nothing before it could possibly compare. And that was in the beginning, not that long ago. Back then most of the inkjet printers could print Giclees on paper, but they weren’t waterproof, yet they had a longevity that was impressive - - if you didn’t get them wet. However we didn’t receive that old warning against hanging them in sunlight. But there were improvements in the works and while HP surged ahead in speed and accuracy, Epson was chugging along perfecting the process that would print using pigments instead of dye inks in eight colors that were waterproof, fast and our images could be printed on canvas. But the best part they could be printed by the artists, sometimes as part of their creative process. So right after Katrina, using the money from a couple of anonymous donations I had received, I bought an Epson 4800 Professional Edition 17” wide printer; and worlds started opening up for me. The eight color system had been perfected; the DPI had increased way beyond the capability of the outdated offset printers, it had large tanks of colors so I wasn’t going to have to buy more inks every few prints, and the images I printed with it were waterproof. Plus, after I learned how to use it properly it allowed me to print reproductions of my paintings that were truly worth signing and offerintg to my collectors..
With it’s eight color system it no longer has to print in three colors and use black to achieve the right values, it prints the colors I use on my paintings in the values (light/dark) I painted them in, and as far as my collectors and I am concerned, that’s pure gold. Giclee printing uses an ink jet system that prints in pigments not in the dye inks of yore. And that’s what makes all the difference in their longevity. Epson has stated the ones on paper should last for 108 years before they start to show any effects from UV rays. On the ones I print on canvas, I also add three coats of varnish after they’ve been stretched for framing. The first two are acrylic satin finish varnishes and the third one is also satin finish but it's a Polymer varnish that will add additional protection from UV. Then, if its surface should get scratched or become grungy, the Polymer varnish will protect the other two coats of varnish and naturally the image. Then if it needs cleaning, it can be accomplished by washing it with Windex (its ammonia) then re-varnishing it again with the polymer varnish All of these advantages combined, will add to the number of your future generations that will enjoy the Treehouse collection you are accumulating now.
